Maryellen attended Wagner College in Staten Island, NY, for both her undergraduate degree and Master's of Physician Assistant Studies. She graduated in 2013 and then entered a one-year Post-Graduate Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program at NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medicine. Upon completion, she stayed on board at Weill Cornell Medicine / Lower Manhattan Hospital and spent the first nine years of her career as an Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant.
After years of taking a very "traditional" approach to patient care, Maryellen found herself developing a growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine. She began working part time at Hyperbaric Medical Solutions in 2021, in hopes of formally exploring another side of healthcare. She quickly grew to love the new concepts and approach and transitioned to working at HMS full time shortly thereafter. She currently serves as the lead clinician for the NYC office. She has found this shift in her career to be eye opening, exciting, and genuinely fulfilling.
Maryellen is proud to be a part of the regenerative medicine community and is thrilled to continually navigate this space as an HMS provider, where she has the opportunity to work alongside many well-respected and distinguished professionals. The HMS clinical group is comprised of individuals from various backgrounds who collectively offer an extensive level of expertise about hyperbarics, and beyond. Furthermore, everyone's dedication and enthusiasm have led to countless accomplishments and achievements over the years. Overall, she is honored to be a part of the impressive and inspiring team of clinicians at HMS.
Maryellen is looking forward to what is to come, in the world of regenerative medicine, and hyperbarics specifically. She is especially excited to be a part of this journey with HMS, as the organization continues to pave the path towards the future of this industry.

How often do you come across a company that has all 5-star reviews? I cannot say enough about HMS and their staff. There are many benefits to HBOT and its worth finding out if it can help you. I highly recommend HMS!Malcolm
This is the finest facility one could imagine. The staff here is phenomenal. Dr. Katz takes his time and explains everything and makes you comfortable. The equipment is clean and well-maintained. If you need hyperbaric oxygen therapy, I would give this location the highest rating possible.Richard Lerner, New York
Best decision for care! We made a lot of financial and personal sacrifices to have our son treated at HMS and it was absolutely the right decision. They were thorough, careful, and when an issue arose, they were able to respond knowledgeably and quickly to care for him. The entire team was joyful and made us feel welcome and cared for time and again. We could've spent a lot less money staying close to home, but we wouldn't have received the professional and warm care that we did. Worth it a 1,000 times over. Bonus: the treatments helped our son gain ground on rehabilitating from a severe traumatic brain injury. Thank you!!!Maria Lara Dailey, MA
Life-changing! The treatment my father received at Hyperbaric Medical Solutions has been nothing short of a miracle. My father, suffering from diabetic vascular disease, decided to start hyperbaric oxygen treatment as a last resort to save his leg from amputation. Within a month's time, the circulation to his lower extremities was so remarkably improved that even his vascular doctor was astounded. In addition to the highly effective treatment my father received, we were equally impressed by the warm and compassionate staff. Brooke, the receptionist, was always super sweet and incredibly accommodating with scheduling and assisting whenever transport issues arose. The state-of-the-art offices are clean and equally inviting. We could not be more grateful for the care and attention we received.Ashley Bello, FL
I went to Hyperbaric Medical Solutions for vision loss and color blindness that I experienced after an eye trauma. Within one week of daily treatments my vision returned to its normal state and I was no longer color blind. I highly recommend hyperbaric oxygen treatment for any inflammation issues that you may experience. I also use the treatments to reduce the chances of the onset of dementia due to brain surgery from brain trauma that I had experienced several years ago. Doctor Alfred is an excellent doctor and his entire team provides amazing service. This center is highly recommended!Gary Parker, Florida
Excellent facility. Highly professional, kind staff and doctors, top notch hyperbaric chamber service. Highly recommended.TJ, New York
At HMS Manhattan we offer:
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the use of prescribed high pressure oxygen to treat a variety of health conditions and diseases. Breathing pure oxygen under pressures greater than sea level increases the amount of oxygen carried by the blood, enabling the oxygen to be dissolved into the hard-to-reach plasma, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluids surrounding the brain and spinal cord. These fluids more easily carry the increased oxygen to affected and damaged areas at up to 1,200% the normal concentration, thus providing a greater opportunity for healing.
HMS is a full service free-standing provider of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, able to care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions. The FDA currently recognizes Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for 14 medical conditions, all of which are generally covered by insurance. In addition, there are many other medical conditions that research has demonstrated efficacy. HMS serves both groups as long as the condition is supported by existing research or is consistent with the mechanisms of action of HBOT. For a complete list of the conditions treated with HBOT, please click here.
HBOT is an all natural therapy with generally no, or temporary, side effects. However, mild irritation to the ear drum may occur in about 10% of patients. The technicians at HMS will be with you every step of the way to prevent this from occurring. Other side effects may include temporary vision changes, dizziness or lightheadedness. In very rare instances, oxygen toxicity may occur, however, risk of this is mitigated by our HBOT protocols and comprehensive patient screening process.
Each of our facilities uses state-of-the-art monoplace hyperbaric chambers. These chambers are made of metal and acrylic which differ from the soft or mild variety in that they deliver 100% oxygen vs. room air (which is only about 20% oxygen), and are able to reach greater atmospheric pressure levels. This allows for the treatment of a wider variety of health conditions more efficiently and effectively.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is generally covered by insurance for the 14 FDA approved medical conditions. Insurance generally does not cover Non-Covered conditions. In either case, insurance will most likely cover the consultation visit, regardless of condition. Please note that at HMS we offer payment plans and financial assistance programs where treatment of a condition is not covered by insurance.
Every HMS patient is unique and evaluated according to their condition and their response to therapy, which determines the number of treatments needed. Generally, patients require 30-40 sessions, though this could be more or less depending on the patient’s specific condition or circumstance. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy works cumulatively in the body and the greatest benefit is seen when treatments are regular (like going to the gym). Therefore, treatment sessions are typically scheduled 4-5 days a week.
