PTSD Awareness Day

PTSD-Awareness-Day.jpg

Today is National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Day. What better time to spread awareness of how this devastating condition may be treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

HBOT is a revolutionary, natural medical therapy in which patients breathe 100% pure oxygen under pressure. This safe, non-toxic, and generally painless treatment floods the blood cells with healing oxygen in levels otherwise unattainable… helping the body to regenerate and promoting healing and stem cell production.  Please click here for Hyperbaric Medical Solutions’ exciting, one minute video on how HBOT works for over 40 medical diseases and conditions, including PTSD and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

PTSD is defined as “a psychological reaction occurring after experiencing a highly stressing event (as wartime combat, physical violence, or a natural disaster) that is usually characterized by depression, anxiety, flashbacks, recurrent nightmares, and avoidance of reminders of the event”.** This condition significantly impairs the sufferer’s ability to function on a daily basis  affecting his/her family’s life as well, putting sufferers at an increased risk for divorce and suicide.  PTSD may present itself immediately after the traumatic triggering event, several years later, or anywhere in between.

PTSD is a condition that will affect 7-8% of the general population at some point in life and affects 5.2 million people in a given year*…more than 3 percent of the population.

Because 11-20% of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffer from PTSD and with an estimated 20+ vets committing suicide each day, the disorder is getting more attention in the news and the government has begun considering additional treatment options.  Recently, Oklahoma House Representative John C. Bennett, who this year sponsored landmark legislation (H.B. 1942) seeking to provide HBOT to veterans with PTSD and TBI, credits HBOT with helping his own recovery. After passing the Oklahoma House unanimously, the bill was held up in Senate committee by 1 State Senator! But not before shining the spotlight on HBOT and starting the movement toward coverage for its use in PTSD cases, which helped lead to its inclusion of the 2014 NDAA led by Congressman Sessions, Chairman of the House Rules Committee.

At Hyperbaric Medical Solutions (HMS) in Long Island, New York, we use HBOT to treat PTSD patients and as part of our commitment to our nation’s military, we are currently seeking medically-qualified patients who are suffering from service-related PTSD and/or a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Selected patients are eligible to receive up to 40 complimentary HBOT treatment sessions. If you or a loved one is suffering, please contact our Medford or Woodbury offices for more information on this offer.

There are also clinical trials under way for HBOT and PTSD. For information on ongoing clinical trials in your area, see http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT01105962
