Patient Education Seminar

HBOT on FiOS1 Long Island

The Mayor was diagnosed on a bitter January day at the age of 22 months and immediately whisked into 20+ hours per week of ABA and speech therapy. The day he boarded a mini bus to begin an autism day program…still only two years old… I couldn’t wrap my mind around the sight of this baby on a school bus. By three, he’d begun treatment with autism specialists, including an allergist, chiropractor, and nutritionist. He also began the strict diet he maintains today. And time moved on.

Along the way, no holistic stone was left unturned…including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It appealed to us because we were looking for safe, non-toxic therapies. And while we’d never judge another parent for their personal choices, my husband and I were more comfortable with a no drug protocol. We could accept potentially slower progress, but not potentially harmful drug side-effects or long-term damage.

The Mayor did 50+ “dives”. He watched the same video for each dive. I can recite it by heart. The time in the chamber was relaxing. I imagined him healing with every breath he took. I envisioned new pathways being forged in his brain, almost willing the affected portions of his brain to regenerate. I was so hopeful. Maybe too hopeful. It sounded too good to be true.

Will we see results? How long will it take?

I vividly remember when I first saw the results. It was after the fourth session when we were in the car on the way to the 5^th dive. Up until then, my essentially non-verbal son was never able string more than 2 words together. If he wanted the car window lowered, it was “Window down.”

But on that drive with just him and me in the car, it happened. “Mom, can you put the window down please?” (Yes, I nearly drove off the road in shock).

There you go. From utterances of 2 words to 8 words. In only four dives. And that was just the beginning.

The Mayor has retained all of his gains from HBOT. The verbal explosion alone would have been worth it, but he also seemed to focus better in school and to do increasingly harder work. For us, it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Many of us take the durability of our feet for granted. We push them to the extreme and hope they will feel better by morning. But what if they don’t? What happens when that sore on your foot doesn’t go away…or gets worse?

Diabetics are especially prone to foot ulcers, which left untreated, may lead to worsening infection, gangrene, and even amputation. Aside from the physical and emotional trauma of losing one’s toes or a foot, an amputation may significantly and permanently impact the life and mobility of the patient.

HMS nurse, Janice Reilly, RN, ACHRN, CWS, has some great advice for diabetics. “A diabetic should never cut their own toe nails. They may have visual acuity problems and neuropathy. Some of them do not even know if they have a foot problem because of loss of sensation. Proper foot care, and nail cutting are all part of healthy prevention of wounds.” Janice said. She also offers this helpful tip: “Checking their feet every night to see if there is any redness also is a simple process. I tell them to put a large mirror under their bed and take off their shoes and socks and look in the mirror for any redness etc. Any changes in the foot are a problem that should be addressed by their podiatrist early on”.
